It’s hard not to look at Meghan Markle and not feel curious about her daily routines and everyday life. How does she make sure her hair always looks perfect? How does she always manage to smile and appear perfectly generous and polite when she is constantly surrounded by paparazzi? Where does she shop and how does she always manage to wear something chic, elegant, and trendy all at once? Since every single outfit is perfectly accessorized, how much does this woman spend on her clothing?! We might not know the answers to many of these questions, but we do have an idea of how much Markle’s wardrobe costs.
Bustle took an in-depth look at everything we know about the outfits Markle wears to big events, and unless the Duchess of Sussex is using Rent The Runway every day (which, somehow, we highly doubt), the calculations are probably pretty correct. Bustle broke down each outfit we’ve seen Markle in, looking at the prices for each piece, from the dresses to the jewelry to the shoes. Oh, and in case you’re thinking that she received most of this stuff as gifts, or borrowed many of these items as promotion for the brands (as many celebrities do), think again: Royal women are apparently not allowed to accept free gifts from fashion designers.

That means that Markle is probably buying everything herself, and with the designers she’s wearing (Dior, Givenchy, Prada, and Chanel — to name a few), that adds up fast. Bustle looked at five of the outfits Markle has been photographed wearing since her marriage to Prince Harry, as well as what she wore to her own wedding reception, and estimated that her wardrobe has cost her about £100,000 in her first month of being part of the royal family. If you don’t include her reception look (which included Cartier earrings that go for £60,000), her outfits have probably totaled about £40,000. In American dollars, this equals about $46,000.

According to Bustle, Markle’s most expensive purchases were her gowns, many of which are custom-made, and therefore don’t have a price tag on them. However, comparing them to prices of other pieces from the designer and knowing that they’re custom would make them easily twice the price.

And according to Glamour, Markle supposedly wore £28,000 (about $37,043) in clothing in less than 24 hours when she and Prince Harry were in Dublin recently.

Essentially, Markle could have purchased a brand new car for the amount of money she spent on five outfits worn in one month. And think about it: That doesn’t even include all of the items she wears when she isn’t being photographed at royal events. In reality, her wardrobe probably costs even more than what Bustle estimated — in 2017, the Express reported that Kate Middleton had spent over £119,000 on new clothes. This clearly isn’t a big deal for the royal family!
