Marrying into the royal family is quite the transition, and an overwhelming one at that. Not only do you have to think about the fact that basically the entire world is now watching your every move, but you also have to stress over whether or not the royals are going to accept you. (We know, these are TOTALLY relatable problems, right?) If you were at all worried about Meghan Markle fitting in with the royal family, you can relax: Meghan has received the most nerdy nickname from Prince Charles, and it shows that they’re getting along just fine.
Your initial reaction to the nickname might be something along the lines of, “What?!” It certainly isn’t traditional or common, and it’s not exactly something most people are going to understand right away. But once you hear the meaning behind it, you’ll totally get how adorable it truly is. According to The Scottish Mail on Sunday, Prince Charles calls Meghan “Tungsten.” Seriously! It’s taken straight from the periodic table of elements.
Tungsten is actually known for being one of the toughest things found in nature. According to Live Science, “it’s super dense and almost impossible to melt.” Tungsten is so strong and durable that it has lots of different uses. It’s also resistant to corrosion, and has the highest melting point and the highest tensile strength of any element.
Basically, it’s strong as hell — just like Meghan.

A source told The Scottish Mail on Sunday, “Prince Charles admires Meghan for her strength and the backbone she gives Harry, who needs a tungsten-type figure in his life, as he can be a bit of a softy. It’s become a term of endearment.” That definitely makes sense, considering everything we know about Meghan and how amazing she is. And hey, it might be strange, but we kind of love how unique and random her nickname is.
This isn’t the first affectionate thing we’ve heard Charles say about Meghan. The Scottish Mail on Sunday reported that Charles said, “She is so intelligent and so nice. She makes Harry happy. We could not like her more.” Plus, the Daily Mail has reported (take this with a grain of salt) that Meghan is one of the biggest reasons Charles and Harry have a better relationship now — and that’s definitely something special. Oh, and never forget that Charles walked Meghan partway down the aisle at the royal wedding, taking over for her own father, who was reportedly dealing with health issues at the time and couldn’t make it.
So yeah, you can say that these two are pretty much besties. We’re into it!
