TSA Bans New Items From Checked Luggage

Following the rules of TSA not only helps you and other fellow travelers catch their flights on time, but also ensures everyone remains safe. But the rules of TSA seem to be constantly changing. The 3.4-ounce liquid limit is still in effect, but the TSA announced new items that were recently added to the “don’t pack” list.
Federal Aviation Administration

The FAA regularly announces TSA updates and items that are not allowed in checked luggage or carry-ons. This U.S. Department of Transportation agency helps ensure safety for travelers, pilots, and air traffic controllers alike.
Recent Changes to TSA Rules

The TSA has undergone several major changes in the past year, including the introduction of REAL IDs for domestic flights. As of May 2025, travelers must have a valid REAL ID to fly, and older IDs will not be accepted as a form of identification at the airport.
“Shoes-Off Policy Removed

The long-standing shoes-off policy has been recently changed as well. Some airports are eliminating the shoes-off policy to make the security lines faster and more efficient. This rule varies based on location and airport.
Touchless ID

Another recent change that has helped improve TSA efficiency is the integration of touchless ID. TSA has started using facial recognition technology for some PreCheck members, which helps streamline the identification process and keep lines to a minimum.
Cordless Hair Tools

Curling irons or flat irons that are powered by gas cartridges or butane are now banned from checked bags. The new rule includes spare cartridges. TSA agents will confiscate them if spotted. However, they can be packed in your carry-on. Regular corded hair tools are still permitted in checked baggage.
Families on the Fly

The new “Families on the Fly” program has added family-only lanes to security lanes starting at Nashville International Airport. The program is designed to help families move through security at their own pace and has been rolled out at select airports starting in July 2025.
3-1-1- Liquid Rule

The 3-1-1 Liquid TSA rule is a regulation that only allows liquids in carry-ons to be in 3.4-ounce containers (or less), 1 quart-sized clear plastic bag for all liquid containers, and 1 bag per passenger. The rule applies to all domestic and international flights departing from the U.S.
Military Travelers’ “Honor Lane”

The “Honor Lane” has been integrated into 11 airports across the U.S. and is designed specifically for military travelers. The FAA has also integrated PreCheck discounts for military members and their families.
TSA Rules Are Constantly Evolving

The integration of new technologies, tools, and systems is helping the TSA become more efficient and safe for travelers, so the rules are evolving as these are integrated. To stay up to date on TSA and FAA regulations, you can visit their website.
