In 2000, seven-year-old Tyrel Wolfe from Midville, Idaho, helped his parents pack Christmas shoeboxes for children overseas. The project, run by Operation Christmas Child through Samaritan’s Purse, involved filling boxes with school supplies, toiletries, and toys. Tyrel included a photo of himself in cowboy gear. He never imagined this simple gesture would change his life forever.

Joana Marchan received the shoebox at a vacation bible school in a suburb of Manila, Philippines. The eight-year-old girl was thrilled with her gift. Inside, she found not only treasures but also Tyrel’s photo and address. The thoughtful package meant the world to her, and she wanted to express her gratitude to the kind boy from Idaho.

A Lost Thank You Letter

She wrote a thank-you letter to express her appreciation, but it got lost in the mail. Despite never receiving a response, Joana never forgot the boy who sent her the special Christmas gift. She kept his information safe, hoping one day she might find a way to thank him. The shoebox remained a cherished memory throughout her childhood.

Eleven Years of Wondering

For over a decade, Joana thought about the boy from the cowboy photo. She wondered what had happened to him and whether he remembered packing that shoebox. Meanwhile, Tyrel had completely forgotten about the charitable project. He went on with his life in Idaho, unaware that someone across the world had treasured his simple gift for years.

A Digital Connection Attempt

In 2009, Joana decided to search for Tyrel on Facebook. She found him and sent a friend request, hoping to finally express her gratitude. Not recognizing her name, 21-year-old Tyrel ignored the request. He had no idea who this stranger from the Philippines was or why she wanted to connect with him online.

Second Chances

Two years passed before Joana tried again in 2011. This time, curiosity got the better of Tyrel, and he responded. He messaged her, asking how they knew each other. “I was curious as to what he was like now. Was he going to college like me?” Joana wondered. Her reply would finally reveal the connection that had lasted over a decade.

The Shoebox Revelation

Joana told Tyrel about the shoebox gift that meant so much to her years ago. Stunned, Tyrel asked his mother, Denise, who reminded him of the charitable activity from his childhood. The two began communicating regularly over Facebook and discovered they shared common interests, including Christian music and religious faith. A special bond began to form.

Finding Common Ground

As they got to know each other online, the connection deepened. Despite living 7,000 miles apart, they found remarkable similarities. Both were passionate about their faith and music, though they enjoyed different styles. They each played musical instruments and loved to sing. The distance between Idaho and Manila seemed to shrink with every conversation they shared.

A Leap of Faith

After a year of corresponding online, Tyrel decided to meet Joana in person. Following his high school graduation in May 2013, he saved money working as a trail-and-bridge builder with his father. “I knew I was taking a big risk. I had never traveled alone, let alone to a foreign country before, and I was meeting people I didn’t know”, Tyrel said.

The First Meeting

Tyrel spent the entire flight to Manila feeling nervous, anxious, and excited. When Joana first saw Tyrel, she burst into tears. For Tyrel, it was equally overwhelming. “When I finally got there and saw her, I had to punch myself a couple times because I thought it was a dream. I was immediately attracted to her”, he recalled.

A World Apart

During his 10-day visit, Tyrel witnessed how Joana’s family lived. Her house measured just 10-by-19 feet with minimal furniture, and all eight family members slept on the floor of one room. The contrast to his life in Idaho was striking. The experience gave Tyrel a new perspective on life and deepened his appreciation for what he had.

Following Tradition

Following Marchan family tradition, the couple couldn’t officially date until Tyrel received permission from Joana’s father, Jun. When the visit ended, saying goodbye was heartbreaking. “It was one of the hardest goodbyes I’ve ever had to say because we didn’t know the next time we’d see each other. I told her I’m going to do whatever it takes to come back to her”, Tyrel said.

Staying Connected

After returning to Idaho, Tyrel and Joana maintained their relationship through Skype and Facebook messaging. The distance made things difficult, but their commitment never wavered. Tyrel saved money and booked another trip beginning November 27, 2013. This time, he planned to stay for an entire month and take their relationship to the next level.

Asking Permission

During his November visit, Tyrel asked Jun for Joana’s hand in marriage. Her father gave his blessing, but Joana’s mother, Rocel, had concerns. She worried the couple was too young and wanted them to wait. Tyrel didn’t give up on his love. He was determined to prove to Joana’s family that their relationship was meant to last.

A Father’s Journey

After some convincing, Tyrel’s father, Ivan, bought a plane ticket to Manila. In May 2014, he took a 10-day trip to meet Marchan’s family personally. Joana’s mother told him, “You are a sign from God that we are allowing Tyrel and Joana to marry. If you had not come, we wouldn’t have let the relationship continue”. The families celebrated with an engagement party.

Building a Future Together

The couple decided to settle in the United States, where Tyrel’s job prospects were better. His work as a trail-and-bridge builder paid well enough to support both of them and send money to Joana’s family in Manila. On August 19, 2014, Joana had her embassy interview and received visa approval. By September 4, they headed to Idaho together.

A Wedding Across Continents

Sadly, Joana’s parents couldn’t obtain visas to attend the October 5, 2014, wedding. They participated via Skype instead. The ceremony took place at Tyrel’s parents’ 400-acre ranch with about 100 guests. Honoring Joana’s heritage, Tyrel wore a barong, the traditional embroidered shirt worn by Filipino grooms. Wedding guests brought packed shoeboxes as gifts.

A New Life in America

The newlyweds settled in their own house in Midville, just a quarter mile from Tyrel’s parents. “It was a big change and adjustment for me. I was raised in the city, and now I’m living in the country with much fewer people and more space, but it’s a beautiful place”, Joana said. She traveled with Tyrel across eight states for his work.

Paying It Forward

The couple made a commitment to pack a shoebox every holiday season, including a note telling their remarkable story. They delivered their first box to Samaritan’s Purse headquarters in North Carolina. “We don’t want to give them some fantasy, but we do want to show that we care and want to share our love”, Tyrel explained about their new tradition.

Love Finds Its Way

With more than 113 million shoeboxes sent to over 130 countries since the project launched in 1993, Joana receiving Tyrel’s gift was remarkable. Rachel Mills, assistant director of Operation Christmas Child, called it like finding a needle in a haystack. Their story proves that simple acts of kindness can create extraordinary connections that span continents and change lives forever.
