Holiday traditions can be a lot of fun, especially when you’re a kid. (Who are we kidding? Us adults love to bake cookies and decorate trees, too.) Yet, when your holiday rituals become your “normal,” it can be easy to forget about the traditions in other countries. For example, would you leave your shoes out on December 5th? It sounds strange, but in other parts the world, kids do it every year — and it’s adorably festive.

If you grew up in the United States and celebrate Christmas, you know all about the one and only Santa Claus. But if you’re a child in Europe, you’re likely familiar with someone just as special: St. Nicholas.
According to National Geographic, St. Nicholas is the original ancestor of Santa Claus. He was also known as a gift giver. But as his story (and the traditions surrounding him) began to die out in the 16th century, St. Nicholas was eventually portrayed as Santa Claus.

On December 5th, kids leave a single shoe out on their doorstep. Then, overnight, the shoe is filled with gifts and treats!
The tradition varies from country to country. However, the most traditional gifts associated with the holiday include chocolate coins, oranges, and candy canes. Yum.
So, if you are ever in Europe on December 5th, don’t be startled at the peculiar sight of kids leaving their shoes out. You might even want to join in on the fun, too.
