Have You Ever Had A Dream Where Your Teeth Are Falling Out? This Is Why

I remember it all quite vividly. Back when I was around 19, I had a series of disturbing dreams that centered around one common topic — my mouth. The dreams started out in a dark room, in which I always had trouble getting out of the bed I was lying. Eventually, I made my way to a mirror and saw my teeth either fall out or disintegrate. When I would wake up from this nightmare spiral, I would immediately check my mouth. Phew — all there. Then, I went online and tried to figure out why my brain was so set on imagining my teeth falling out.

Dreams are powerful for so many reasons. They happen since our brains are active at night, even while we’re asleep. Sometimes, our brains can help us conquer our greatest fears. Other times, they’re more traumatic than we’d like to admit. There’s a reason why 15 years later, those tooth dreams are still so rich in my mind. While I came out of them unscathed, the images and the fear still felt very real.

Like most dreams, imagining your teeth falling out in the midst of sleep has both positive and negative meanings behind it — but surprisingly, most are good.

Teeth falling out is a sign of transformation. Interpret Your Dream believes that it’s tied to life changes, including loss and personal growth. It makes sense, especially when you consider that we lose the most teeth when we’re growing up, and it’s a sign that we’re getting older.

As a 19-year-old, this made a lot of sense. I was going through some devastating changes with my family after my mom’s cancer returned and was also on my own for the first time at a college out of state. While I was not that far away from my family, I still felt far. At that time in my life, I had to really look at the world as an adult and take on responsibilities, both physical and emotional, that were new to me.

Of course, there are other ways to interpret a dream like this. Dr. Oz believes that dreams involving teeth falling out may mean you’ve told a secret or shared too much information that should have been kept private.

Even though they’re scary, just remember that these dreams are common. You’ll probably have a similar dream at least once in your life. Just make sure to blame it on your brain — not your dentist.
