The Duchess of Sussex just proved that she is a literal ray of sunshine. On July 5th, alongside hubby Prince Harry, Meghan Markle attended the Your Commonwealth Youth Challenge Reception in London’s Marlborough House. The newest member of the royal family turned heads in a bright yellow dress, which is a totally new look for Markle.
According to fashion commentator Lucas Armitage via DailyMail.co.uk, Markle usually sticks to wearing muted colors, most likely as a “show of respect” for Queen Elizabeth. The Queen is known for her bold color choices, so therefore, in an effort to not clash with her grandmother-in-law during public outings, Markle often dons nudes, creams, and subtler hues.
But when the Queen is away, the Duchess will play — and Markle looks like she took some major inspiration from Queen Elizabeth with this sunny number.
Markle’s sheath dress is a creation from designer Brandon Maxwell, who gained fashion fame in 2012 as Lady Gaga’s stylist. It’s crafted from a double-face crepe fabric, and features a flattering bateau neckline and midi-length skirt.
Sadly, we have bad news for those of you who planned on stealing Markle’s look. The Maxwell dress, which retailed online for $523, according to HarpersBazaar.com, is currently sold out. Surprise, surprise.

The Queen wore a similar shade of bright yellow just a few days earlier on July 2nd. She lit up the Ceremony of the Keys, during the first day of Scotland’s Holyrood Week, in a quintessential matching yellow hat and coat set. Is this a royal coincidence? Or did Markle dress to impress?
Either way, we’re loving the coordination.

If Meghan Markle wears yellow, we wear yellow. Excuse us while we buy all the yellow clothing we can muster.
