Can you send a message through your hair? Some people think so — and they think Meghan Markle was trying to do just that. Markle has experimented with a lot of hairstyles, but it’s her iconic messy bun that’s drawing a lot of attention.
For us non-royals, sporting a messy bun means one thing — it’s hot out, you’ve got work to do, and you simply don’t care about paying too much attention to your tresses. That “anything goes” approach is why the messy bun is so cute. It pretty much signifies that we’re working women with way too much on our to-do list to give all that much thought about appearance. And there’s a great chance that a photo shoot isn’t on that aforementioned list, so it makes sense.
But for Markle, who officially joined the royal family on May 19th of this year, it’s actually tough to make an appearance anywhere without a photographer present. Still, she chooses the messy bun style. And that could very well be a message saying that aside from her new title as Duchess of Sussex, Markle is actually pretty laid back. It could also state that while she has respect for her family, she won’t do things simply because it’s tradition. Before she was a duchess, she was Meghan Markle — and that won’t change anytime soon.
Here’s the bun in action during a trip to South Africa.

And here it is again, albeit slightly less messy.

Elle chatted with sociologist Dr. Anna Akbari about the hair choice, and Dr. Akbari stated that even though it may look messy, a lot of time likely went into it. My guess is it took more than it does when you put your hair in a messy bun to go to a workout class. It is not a half-a** messy bun,” she said. She also exclaimed it could totally be a power move.
It seems like Markle is favoring the bun over all other hairstyles these days. All of a sudden, our messy buns seems a lot less messy and a lot more royal.
