YouTube Took Down This New Scary Movie’s Ad Because It Was *That* Disturbing

You know a movie is going to be horrifying if YouTube has to take down its ad because they find it to be too “shocking.” After a concerned YouTube user tweeted about a terrifying jump scare ad for the upcoming scary movie The Nun, YouTube removed the ad from the site, stating that it violated their ad guidelines.

“WARNING! If you see an ad on youtube with the volume sign being turned down and nothing else, ITS A JUMPSCARE for the new NUN movie coming out,” Twitter user @bbydvas tweeted on August 12th. “i advise you look away and/or turn down the volume if you have anxiety or just straight up hate jumpscares, pls rt to save a life.”

The tweet has since gone viral, having garnered over 150,000 likes and just under 140,000 retweets as of August 16th. On August 13th, YouTube saw the tweet and stepped in to help us scaredy-cats out.

The video sharing platform removed the ad, stating that it “violates our shocking content policy.” According to the Google support page, “Promotions that are likely to shock or scare” violate YouTube’s ad policy, as do ads that use profane or violent language, gruesome imagery, and/or graphic images or accounts of physical trauma. Not cool, Nun!

According to People, the ad in question first shows a volume control icon being turned down before the title demonic nun unexpectedly pops up. And if you’ve seen that nun in the film’s recent trailers, she’s not a welcome sight by any means.

(Warning: the below trailer also includes a jump scare.)

The Nun, set to be released September 6th, 2018, stars Taissa Farmiga a young nun investigating the mysterious suicide of a Romanian nun. The film is brought to us by James Wan, director of the Conjuring series, and takes place within the same universe. And don’t you worry. The scary-ass star of the show is the same nun that delighted us in The Conjuring 2.

If getting through the YouTube trailer without breaking into a sweat is near impossible for you, you might want to skip out on seeing The Nun. But as for the rest of us, we can’t wait to be scared silly. Just keep the terror off our ads and in the theater — okay, Nun?
