The One Netflix Movie You Need To Watch (If You Haven’t Already) This Weekend

Get your PJs on and put the popcorn on the stove. We have a movie recommendation that you need to see sooner than later. If you haven’t already watched Netflix’s To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before — what are you doing? Turn it on NOW!

The feel-good rom-com, based off of the New York Times Bestseller by Jenny Han, stars Lana Condor as Lara Jean Covey, a high school junior who’s just trying to fly under the radar and avoid typical teenage drama. Lara Jean is obsessed with romance, but is also terrified of real-life love. So when she feels a crush coming on, she spills her guts in a secret love letter.

Her five letters have remained hidden and untouched up until now. But somehow, someway, the letters get mailed.

Whether you’ve been subjected to the embarrassment of your deepest desires going public or not, anyone who has had a teenage crush can connect with Lara Jean’s naivety, emotional turmoil, and longing for that literary-worthy romance story.

To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before was directed by Susan Johnson, known also for directing 2016’s Carrie Pilby. Sofia Alvarez, formerly a writer for the FXX show Man Seeking Woman, wrote the screenplay. Along with Jenny Han, we’ve got a female-led film which is all the more reason to watch it over and over and over again.

On August 14th, Condor talked to Vulture about how her Asian-American identity influenced the film.

“Opportunities like this don’t come around that often for me where the lead of a rom-com happens to be Asian,” Condor said. “With this movie, yes, the lead is an Asian girl, but I feel like when you watch the movie, you’re just watching the average American family in the real world and it’s not in your face.”

Seriously, friends — To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before will be your favorite film of the summer. And if you’re like Lara Jean, don’t stop writing your love letters. They might lead to something great.
