Comic Book Legend Stan Lee Has Died At 95, And Our Hearts Are Hurting So Much

Early this morning, Monday, November 12th, comic book legend Stan Lee was rushed to Cedars Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles after having suffered a medical emergency. According to Variety, Lee died shortly after his admittance. He was 95.

Lee, who worked alongside comic book artist Jack Kirby, is best known for his impressive writing career that resulted in the creation of iconic Marvel characters like Spider-Man, Black Panther, Thor, Iron Man, and the Fantastic Four. His characters, created throughout the 1960s, ushered in the Silver Age of Comics and made Marvel the industry giant it is today.

Although Lee, born Stanley Lieber, left Marvel in 1972, he maintained a status of chairman emeritus throughout his life and received producing credits for Marvel’s live-action flicks. He also made cameo appearances in several Marvel films, and even preemptively filmed cameos for Deadpool 2 and Guardians of the Galaxy 2, in case he would not be able to come during filming time.

Comic book creation runs in the Lieber family. Lee’s younger brother, Larry, became a comic book artist and Lee’s uncle was the brother-in-law of comic book publisher Martin Goodman. Lee entered the industry in his teen years and by 19, he already had Captain America under his belt. Before his 20th birthday, Lee was the interim editor at Timely Comics, which eventually became Marvel.

On top of his comic book fame, Lee was also a WWII veteran, former publisher, and later, “creative giant” of Pow! Entertainment. In 2008, former-President George W. Bush awarded Lee the National Medal of Arts, which honored the comic book king as “one of America’s most prolific storytellers.”

In 2012, Lee was awarded the Producers Guild of America’s Vanguard Award, which recognized his achievements in new media and technology.

Lee leaves behind two daughters, Joan C. and Jan. His wife of 70 years, Joan B. Lee, passed last year. We’re thankful Lee gave us so much of his imagination and we send our condolences to his family.
