If it feels like Kendall Jenner can’t go more than a few months without finding herself in the midst of a big controversy, that’s because it’s true. The supermodel is once again facing backlash over one of her offensive photos, and this one involves Vogue.
Both Vogue and Jenner are being accused of cultural appropriation after the magazine shared an image on their Instagram page from a recent photoshoot with the reality star. The picture featured a close-up of Jenner, who was wearing a cropped, curly hairstyle that many viewed as an afro.
Another photo showed Jenner sitting next to Dutch model Imaan Hammam, who is of Eygptian and Moroccan descent. Although Jenner was still shown in the curly hairstyle, Hammam’s hair was straightened for the shoot, something that confused fans of the magazine, who didn’t understand why both were shown with seemingly unnatural hairstyles.

The controversy took over social media, with users blasting both Jenner and Vogue for their photoshoot decisions. It got so bad, in fact, that Vogue responded with a statement to People, saying, “The image is meant to be an update of the romantic Edwardian/Gibson Girl hair which suits the period feel of the Brock Collection, and also the big hair of the ’60s and the early ’70s, that puffed-out, teased-out look of those eras. We apologize if it came across differently than intended, and we certainly did not mean to offend anyone by it.”
Jenner also shared one of the photos on her own Instagram account, along with another one featuring her in an orange fuzzy bodysuit and an orange and black wig. The model hasn’t released any statement on the controversy so far.
This certainly isn’t the first time Jenner has been involved in such an issue, but it’s also not the first time a Vogue photoshoot has come under fire for being racially insensitive. In March 2017, the magazine used photos of Karlie Kloss in a Japanese-inspired spread that many accused of yellowface. In the shoot, Kloss wore traditional geisha garments, powerdy makeup, and a nihongami wig. She even posed with a sumo wrestler and in front of a tea house.
If this proves anything, it’s that we all need to be better.
