The Internet Is In A Full-On War Over Whether This Picture Is A Door Or A Beach — What Do *You* Think?

In times of great stress, there’s one thing that brings this world together — a sensory illusion. You probably remember “the dress,” and the audio of Yanny and Laurel. And now there’s another one that’s getting people talking. A picture circulated that can either be a door or a beach, and people have opinions, obvs.

Even though these things often tear the internet apart, they’re fascinating. Not only do they make you appreciate your brain a bit more, but they’re wonderful conversation starters. It’s even fun to challenge yourself to see if you can visualize the other side of the debate. Most times, it’s difficult. For example, as hard as I tried, I only heard “Laurel” — so much that I thought the Yanny people out there were lying.

This time around, the photo — initially posted by @rebeccareilly on Twitter — questions us in asking, is this a picture of a door or a beach? Part of the complication could be that the picture, itself, isn’t very direct. It could be a photo looking down at a beach scene,  or a zoomed-in picture of a door.

Nearly 250,000 voted in the poll she took, and the vote was almost split down the middle. The majority of 54% saw a door, while 46% saw a beach. What do you see?

But by zooming out, someone shows that it’s, without a doubt, a door. (Albeit, a strange looking one.)

A few people called out the poster for doctoring the beach picture, showing that the people in the “ocean” all happen to have pixellated squares around them.

But others who are pro-beach swear it’s just poor resolution all around.

No matter what, it’s kind of strange how our eyes perceive things. This might not be the next “dress” per se, but it’s a fun little exercise that proves that things aren’t always the way they seem.
