Flying can be a scary thing. While you may be on planes all the time for work, you may very well feel unsettled over a bit of unexpected turbulence. And even though plane crashes are a lot less common than car crashes, it’s much easier to feel uneasy while boarding. Fortunately, pilots have a lot of confidence while in the air. Don’t believe it? Just watch this video of a TUI Boeing 757-200 landing at the Bristol Airport under extreme weather conditions.
According to CNN, the pilot’s name is Captain Brenda Riepsaame Wassink, and she landed the plane while dealing with Storm Callum, which led to a lot of flooding in the U.K. The video that’s circulating sure is a nail-biter. Fortunately, everyone on board was in safe hands.
Thrillist reports that the technique that Captain Riepsaame Wassink used is called crabbing. For those unfamiliar with the ins and outs of landing a plane (which I can safely guess is mostly everyone), pilots “crab” by trying to face the nose of the plane into the wind, and then turning at the last minute prior to actually landing. It sounds scary, but Captain Riepsaame Wassink makes it look easy.

If you have any aspiring female pilots in your family, you may want to show them this video. Captain Riepsaame Wassink really is an inspiration.
Next time you’re on a plane and a little nervous about the weather, just remember this superior landing. Pilots have an important job on their hands, and they often know a bunch of tricks to make sure their passengers stay safe.
