Dandruff Scraping Videos Are The New Pimple Popping (Someone Help Us)

Okay — we’ll admit it. We’ve fallen down the pimple-popping rabbit hole in the past. Not on purpose! It just happens, you know? And just when we thought our days of watching viral popping and picking videos were behind us, a new craze has caught our attention: dandruff scraping.

Yes, dandruff scraping is exactly what it sounds like, and these videos have us wondering if the internet has gone too far. Some would probably say the web became unhinged even before pimple popping took off. But others — over 10 million others — are seemingly fascinating with dandruff content.

Simply searching “dandruff scraping” on YouTube results in countless videos with hundreds of thousands, and even several million, views on each. One video, titled “Best dandruff compilation || Scratching hair products and dandruff,” has garnered over 6.3 million views in just six months.

Many people in the comments express their confusion as to why they’re even watching the video. But this, like pimple popping, shows that there’s something about picking that certain people find so satisfying.

Entire YouTube channels dedicated to dandruff have sprung up in recent months. Girlflakesworld and ScratchingMyScalpOff are just two of many YouTubers who let their viewers get up close and personal with their flaking scalp.

Whether you have an ASMR-like response to dandruff scraping or find the phenomenon downright nasty, these videos are actually doing a lot of good for the “dandruff community.”

Not only do they make those who suffer with dandruff feel less ostracized, but these videos are raising awareness about flakes that aren’t just the result of a dry scalp. According to TeenVogue.com, dermatologist Dr. Sejal Shah notes that some of the larger, more oily flakes being scratched in these videos align with seborrheic dermatitis, which is a more serious form of scalp inflammation.

Several YouTubers actually talk to their viewers about their scalp troubles, which could in turn convince someone out there to finally seek out scalp help from a dermatologist. Over-the-counter treatments are usually prescribed to those suffering with abnormally large flakes and irritated scalps.

Listen, if the videos can do some good in this wild world, then so be it. But dandruff scraping has us slightly confused and scratching our heads (pun intended). We think we might just sit this one out and wait for the next gross viral internet trend to land.
