Shawn Mendes And Camila Cabello Are Totally #CoupleGoals, But Some Fans Aren’t So Sure

It’s the classic meet-cute — two musicians work on a collaborative song together and fall in love. Okay, maybe it’s not all that common for the majority of us, but it’s definitely how Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello got their start.

The two were first introduced to one another back in 2014, when both Mendes and Cabello opened for Austin Mahone. At the time, Cabello was part of Fifth Harmony — she hadn’t tried going solo just yet. Cabello was very interested in meeting Mendes, but Mendes was a little stand-offish.

“I didn’t talk to anybody,” he said in a joint interview for V. “You were the only person that talked to me. Like, you were the only one of everybody on that tour who would say words to me.”

So, first? Props to Camila Cabello for being the one to break the ice. The two then became friends, and in 2015 went on to release a single called “I Know What You Did Last Summer.” They have been fighting off relationship rumors ever since.

Most recently, they released a song called “Señorita.” And then they were spotted kissing. A lot. So, it’s safe to say that they finally chose to give love a chance, after all these years.

You might assume that it’s a wonderful thing that these two got together. But, some fans still aren’t buying it.

They think that since Mendes and Cabello have gone from zero affection to extreme PDA, and that this relationship is no more than a publicity stunt. And, that’s a real puzzler.

Without a doubt, their relationship — which they have yet to confirm in actual words — has made a lot of people more interested in their duets.

But also, it’s important to remember that these two are young. Shawn Mendes is 20, and Camila Cabello is 22. They’ve both had relationship experience before, but they’re right in the midst of a honeymoon period.

And it just so happens that they’ve been in public a lot recently. And, in public together a lot recently. It’s easy to assume that they may be laying it on a little thick.

But when you’ve known someone for as long as these two have known each other? That honeymoon period will be even easier. So, perhaps they don’t even know how often they’re laying on the PDA — this is just them in their natural, comfortable element.

Still, people are a little suspicious. Maybe it’s because they’ve denied that they’ve been anything more than best friends for so long.

This situation is actually more common than people might believe. Cabello and Mendes could have been each other’s end game. Maybe they just weren’t ready to get into a relationship that they knew would be serious.

It’s unclear if people would still assume this was a PR move if they weren’t so heavily shipped. People have wanted the two of them to get together for quite some time.

It’s almost split. Half of their fans think the kissing photos are legit, while others feel like they’re being faked.

Regardless of how the romantic relationship started, Cabello and Mendes shouldn’t be focusing on the fan reaction. They should be focusing on themselves.

People are always going to pay attention when they’re around. Because, dating or not, they’re celebrities. And celebrities tend to get a lot of attention when they’re out in the open — kissing or not.

At the very least, their strong friendship isn’t a PR stunt. If so, it’d be the longest stunt of all time.

They don’t owe anything to anyone. But they have to admit that the timing is slightly interesting. “Señorita” was just released on June 21st, and it’s burning up the charts.

Pretty soon, the honeymoon period will be over — and Cabello and Mendes might be a little over the PDA. But for now, it’s not harming anyone.

Still, a little advice. If they’re being genuine, and want to get rid of the PR rumor, maybe they should have some indoor dates where the paparazzi won’t be.
