The contentious history between the Royal Family and the press is a long one, dating back to 1953 when rumors of Princess Margaret and her relationship with divorcee Peter Townsend first emerged. It wasn’t long before the media began openly criticizing and documenting scandals involving the monarchy, with Princess Margaret receiving much of the attention in the early years. Thus began the consistent flow of media-sponsored royal feud rumors.
By 1980, Diana Spencer, soon-to-be Princess Di, gained the attention of the unrelenting tabloids that have since become popular in Britain and around the world. It’s well known that all of this attention was rarely positive, and that the media was incredibly critical of Diana. Tabloids documented the decline and end of her marriage, and continued to aggressively follow her until her tragic death.
Today, the media still loves to talk about the Royal Family, largely due to just how much the world enjoys reading about their lives. Royal scandals sell and tabloids are in the business of making money off of scandals. Sometimes what is published is true, sometimes it’s exaggerated, and sometimes it is truly just made up.
Here’s your guide to the 15 reasons people think the Royal Family is feuding and the truth behind the rumors.

Early on in Prince Harry and Meghan’s relationship, Prince William and Kate announced they were pregnant with their third child. The Daily Star then began reporting that Kate was “furious” at the new couple, saying that her pregnancy was being overshadowed by the new romance.
It is difficult to say just how likely it is that sharing the spotlight with Meghan would cause a major rift between the two. But we have our suspicions.

Prince William is reported to have approach Prince Harry before his engagement to Meghan Markle, expressing concern that things were moving too fast.
While some believe this was just a simple misunderstanding that was quickly resolved, others say that the tension between the two is a long-standing issue rooted in Prince Harry’s preoccupation with Meghan.

One rumor emerged that Meghan had been berating the staff at Kensington Palace. According to reports, Kate called Meghan out on it, creating major tension between the two. But apparently it was just a one-time thing they were working through.
That being said, the Palace denied that such a disagreement ever took place at all.

Although both Prince Harry and Prince William have homes in Kensington Palace, Meghan and Prince Harry chose to move about 25 miles away. There was speculation that this was further proof the couples are fighting, but that doesn’t seem to be the case.
Instead, the move seems to be about space. While the first home had only two rooms, the Frogmore Cottage has ten. That seems like a pretty innocent reason to move.

In response to speculations about the move to Frogmore Cottage, an anonymous source was quoted as saying that Kate and Meghan don’t get along because they’re very different people. Although this could certainly be true, it isn’t exactly evidence of a feud.
Lots of siblings and in-laws have differences in opinion or personality. But they still continue to have a relationship without any major drama.

After the wedding of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry, there was an influx of press about the Royal Family. One rumor that gained traction was that Meghan made Kate cry as she was getting Princess Charlotte ready for her role as flower girl.
There’s no evidence of what actually happened, except that Kate was said to have left in tears. Vanity Fair gets right to point, noting that tears wouldn’t really be abnormal given the circumstances — Kate had just given birth to her youngest child.

When Kate and Meghan were seen being “warm” with one another on Christmas, the credit was given to Prince Charles. An inside source claims to have seen him telling the girls to straighten up and fly right. While this doesn’t sound like an absurd suggestion, it is still largely based on speculation.

While pregnant, Meghan Markle flew to New York City for a baby shower hosted by Serena Williams. This extravagant event was said to cost as much as $200k and Kate Middleton notably didn’t attend the event. This fueled speculations about a disagreement between the two.
But as Cosmopolitan pointed out, Kate was traveling with her family at the time. Plus, when Meghan arrived home, the Duchess of Cambridge hosted her UK shower.

Even though the Duchess of Cambridge is a retired actress herself, her friendships with celebrities were called in to question. In fact, Patrick Jepson, who served as Princess Diana’s royal secretary wrote a very critical op-ed for Daily Mail, warning that favors from the “mega-rich” come with strings and that this was a bad move on Meghan’s part.

Kate Middleton gave birth to all three of her children at St. Mary’s Hospital in London. But in January 2019, it was reported that Meghan Markle wouldn’t be choosing the same hospital, but that she was going to be delivering at Frimley Park Hospital in Surrey.
It wasn’t until just recently that we learned neither of these hospitals was actually chosen. Archie was instead born at Portland Hospital in Westminster.

The Duchess of Sussex was apparently shot down when she suggested wearing a tiara to a state dinner in Fiji. This was said to have a lot to do with the fact that Kate wore something similar at Buckingham Palace.
Once again, Prince Charles was said to be involved in this feud, which was said to have ended with him telling Meghan her being so new to the family made her request inappropriate.

It is worth noting that the Duchess of Cambridge and the Duchess of Sussex have received the most attention from the media. Plus they bear most of the blame for recent royal feud rumors. Unfortunately, this trend could be rooted in sexism, fueled by beliefs that women are cattier than men and more likely to have fights over petty details.

As pointed out by Vanity Fair, many of the reports about feuds between Meghan and Kate fuel the image of Meghan as an “angry black woman.” This harmful stereotype isn’t a new one and may have been adopted by the media because many people are still uncomfortable with women of color being in positions of power. There’s certainly still a lot of progress that needs to be made.

The Royal Foundation is the philanthropic organization formed by Prince William and Prince Harry back in 2009. But apparently changes are just around the corner.
On June 20, 2019, an important announcement was made concerning the future of the foundation. Markle and Prince Harry plan to step away and start their own charity. It has been said that this is only further evidence that things are rocky between the couples, but Time reports that there is really nothing significant about this split.

According to Fox News, getting the newlyweds “as far away as possible” was the goal behind suggesting that they move abroad. There was talk that the two would wind up in Australia or Canada after the arrival of the baby so Prince William wouldn’t have to compete with them for attention.
According to the official Instagram of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, the two won’t end up in Canada or Australia after all. Instead, the family will be spending the fall touring Africa.
