What happens when you’ve got a solid show with a lead who’s spouted out some racist and offensive thoughts? Well, you go on without her. ABC canceled the reboot of Roseanne shortly after Roseanne Barr posted a bigoted tweet about Valerie Jarrett, an African American woman who worked with Barack Obama. The cancelation was kind of amazing — even though the show was doing fantastic with viewers, it was a sign that racist behavior won’t be tolerated at the network. Now it seems like the show will go on, just not with their controversial lead star.
A spinoff called The Conners has been ordered by ABC, which means that viewers haven’t seen the last of Dan, Becky, D.J., and Darlene. Barr won’t act in or have any creative input on the show, but seems satisfied that the story of her fictional family will continue on.
“I regret the circumstances that have caused me to be removed from Roseanne,” Barr said in a statement per Variety. “I agreed to the settlement in order that 200 jobs of beloved cast and crew could be saved, and I wish the best for everyone involved.”
It’s on the schedule to return this fall, filling the 8 p.m. slot on Tuesdays. That’s right where Roseanne would have been had the show continued.
“We are grateful to have reached this agreement to keep our team working as we continue to explore stories of the Conner family,” said Tom Werner, one of the show’s executive producers, in a statement per Variety.
