Cardi B Clapped Back At This Male Celeb’s Comments About Female Rappers–And We’re Here For It

It’s a great time to be a female rapper — regardless of what people like Jermaine Dupri may think. Dupri, known best as a rapper and songwriter, shot his mouth off when it came to females in the business, and not everyone was too happy about what he had to say. But out of everyone, Cardi B responded best.

Dupri’s comments came from an interview with People. It started out pretty positive — he credited Da Brat for breaking the mold for female rappers. “When Brat came out, she was the first female solo artist to go platinum,” he stated. But then, he took it in a totally different direction.

When asked who his favorite female rapper today was, Dupri had a long pause. “I can’t really say,” he finally admitted. “I feel like they all rapping about the same thing.” And that one thing? Dancing in the clubs. “For me, it’s like strippers rapping.”

Even though Dupri was trying to keep it real, it makes sense as to why a lot of people would be offended by that comment. Every female rapper out there was more or less stereotyped by a man with enormous credentials.

Cardi B’s message in response was short, but definitely not sweet. The message is wonderful, but the video is NSFW.

In it, she talked about when she first came out on the scene. “First of all, I rap about my p*ssy because she’s my best friend and second of all it’s because it seems like that’s what people want to hear,” she said.

She also mentioned that when she tried other topics, fans weren’t into it.

“It’s like if that’s what people ain’t trying to hear then I’m going to start rapping about my p*ssy again,” she added.

But it was the final part of the video that really got the word across.

She mentioned that there’s plenty of female rappers out there rapping about all sorts of different issues.

They’re just not getting any support. Cardi B is putting a lot of blame on others in the industry for not making these talented voices heard.

“Don’t blame that on us when y’all not the ones who are supporting them,” she said. Her next video brought the receipts.

Cardi B was quick to plug a bunch of other female rappers who she felt deserved a lot of recognition. She also put a call out to people to start putting them on the radio and feature them in their blogs.

One of the women, named Tierra Whack, already has a beloved fanbase on Instagram. But, it could be even bigger.

“You’re one of the best out period,” one fan stated to her. “Lyrically, flow, style, your vision, your creativity. It’s all deserved.”

Plenty of people were thanking Cardi B on social media for making such an important video. It’s good to know that she’s really in touch with her musical genre. Dupri may just be very well out of date.

Cardi B’s message was also huge for women everywhere. Dupri’s message made it seem like women had a difficult time with being creative, when that’s obviously not true.

It’s vaguely similar to a message that likely still haunts Saturday Night Live star Kenan Thompson. Even though Thompson is a legend on the show, he made headlines in 2013 after stating that he didn’t think black women were ready for comedy.

[fm_giphy url=”https://media.giphy.com/media/5b5OU7aUekfdSAER5I/giphy.gif”]

Thankfully, Saturday Night Live managed to prove him wrong.

There are plenty of black female comedians out there who simply haven’t had the same support as other comedians. But, it doesn’t mean they’re not funny — or ready for the big stage.

Men need to realize that these blanket statements only hurt women.

They devalue the women who are working hard but haven’t gotten the chance to prove themselves to a wide audience just yet.

Aside from the women that Cardi B mentioned, there are plenty of others who are breaking into the business and using rap as a way to express themselves. Many of them likely haven’t even set foot in a club before.

Hopefully, Dupri will get the message. And if people keep sharing Cardi B’s video, he likely will. It’s not the first time he was wrong in public.

There were kinder ways for him to word his feelings. He doesn’t have to necessarily be a fan of the rappers out there today.

[fm_twitter url=”https://twitter.com/VRhaniku_Haynes/status/1149652224030625793″]

But, he could at least acknowledge the fact that there are creative voices who aren’t getting the chances they should.

Even though he recognized the fact that women rappers have nearly outsold men, he failed to realize that music is much more than what’s in the Billboard Top 20.

If you’re a female rapper, consider sending Dupri your demo tape. He might need to be better educated on the genre today.
