What happens when you find out that the guy you’ve been falling madly in love with is basically “the Prince William of Singapore”? Oh, and btw, his mother hates you. That’s what Rachel Chu, played by Constance Wu, has to grapple with in the box office smash hit Crazy Rich Asians. The film has been dubbed the best movie of the summer, and for those who fell in love with everything Crazy has to offer, we have great news — it’s getting a sequel.

It’s a culture-clash rom-com set amongst the Singaporean high society where Rachel, an Asian-American, must dodge every hardball her crazy-rich boyfriend’s mother throws at her. It’s a familiar Cinderella-esque story, but delivered in an entirely new way. This is the first Hollywood film in 25 years to give us an all-Asian cast with an Asian-American lead (the last was 1993’s The Joy Luck Club).

Based off of the 2013 Kevin Kwan novel by the same name, Crazy Rich Asians pulled in a whopping $35.2 million during its opening weekend — almost double what experts predicted. Having only been out for nine days as of today, August 24th, the film has already racked up $50 million in ticket sales.

And its box office boom has already sparked interest in a sequel.

The sequel would most likely be based on Kwan’s 2015 follow-up novel, China Rich Girlfriend. Without giving away too much of the plot, China Rich Girlfriend follows Rachel and boyfriend, Nick Young, played by Henry Golding in the film, in the next phase of their relationship, having conquered the first familial hurdle.

And just an FYI: there’s also a third installment of this novel series. We could be seeing a lot more of Rachel and Nick on the big screen in the years to come.
