It’s been a tough year for Ariana Grande. The singer faced a lot of criticism after a quick-yet-passionate romance with Saturday Night Live cast member Pete Davidson, and she’s still mourning the death of her ex, Mac Miller, who passed away after an accidental overdose. Still, Ariana is trying to stay positive — and likely figured that a new look may help her move forward.
Known for her signature (and reportedly very heavy) high ponytail, Grande revealed a shorter cut on Instagram. Her color is also a lighter brown. Just days ago, she was spotted rocking a blonde look, and while fans didn’t know if it was a wig or a more permanent change, it seems like the singer feels most like herself as a brunette.
Thought Grande’s main focus of the photo seemed to be the fun filter she used (which miraculously made her eyebrows vanish), fans were quick to notice that her hair was much shorter. And most were extremely supportive of the drastic new look.

It’s strange to see Grande without the ponytail, which she initially adopted while her hair recovered from brutal bleaching treatments she underwent on the set of the Nickelodeon series Victorious. Pretty soon, it became rare to see her with any other style.

The singer recently released the song “Thank U, Next,” which pays tribute to all of her significant exes — including Davidson and Miller. But with lyrics like, “Look what you taught me, And for that, I say, Thank you, next,” paired with this brand new cut, it’s obvious that Grande is ready to move forward and start a brand new chapter.
