We Just Watched Ariana Grande’s New Music Video — Here’s What We Discovered

Stop what you’re doing immediately because the princess of pop music has dropped a new song! Ariana Grande, who with the swish of her ponytail creates magic has released another phenomenal single. But this time it’s the music video for “Boyfriend” that we can’t handle.

The Grammy Award-winning pop sensation teamed up with video producer and go-to collaborator Hannah Lux Davis, who has given us incredible visuals for “Thank U, Next” and “7 Rings.” Joined by Social House, a pop duo made up Michael “Mikey” Foster and Charles “Scootie” Anderson from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, “Boyfriend” is the high-energy duet we’ve all been waiting for.

We knew the video was going to be a visual feast, but what we didn’t expect was to see a completely new side to Ariana.

Ariana Was Inspired By Real Life

And before you get too excited, she wasn’t referring to herself.

On Twitter, Ari wrote:

“Well, I feel like this song captures a common theme in the lives of so many people I know!” she responded to a fan. “People want to feel love but don’t want to define their relationship and have trouble fully committing or trusting or allowing themselves to fully love someone. Even [though] they want to.”

She Wasn’t Trying To Encourage Drama But Hoping To Inspire Love

Taking a leap of faith is something we could all try.

“We wanted to make something uplifting that captures that feeling of being afraid to take the leap & trust, being afraid of being hurt or feeling like you won’t be enough for that person [sic],” she continued on Twitter. “But also how it feels to have a crippling crush on someone.”

The Video Follows A Complicated Romance

Ariana and Mikey play characters in a bit of a sticky situation.

Needless to say, the two aren’t officially in an exclusive relationship but they can’t stand seeing the other person flirting with someone else either. At a party (where everyone is gorgeous) Ari spots her man-that-isn’t-her-man chatting with another beautiful woman. Watching this, she becomes overwrought with jealousy and is pictured attacking her until the scene snaps back to reality revealing that Ariana was really just lost in a violent daydream. Later in the video, Mikey is pictured fighting guys as he sees Ariana hitting on other cute guys.

The Voice Of Reason

The pair’s mutual friend, Scootie, plays the role of mediator and tries to get Ariana and Mikey to talk things through.

But we all know, reason has no place when it comes to matters of the heart. And Scootie is left shaking his head in disappointment when he catches them in the midst of a steamy make-out sesh in the bathroom that has destroyed their surroundings.

But A Deeper Look At The Lyrics Reveal A Lot

Sometimes things are complicated and hold us back from taking a chance on someone.

The track opens with what seems like a reference to Ariana’s own life right now. “I’m a motherf—in’ train wreck/I don’t wanna be too much/But I don’t wanna miss your touch/And you don’t seem to give a f—,” she purrs. We’ve all been there: wanting to date someone but feeling like your life is too messy for someone else. But even then, you don’t want that person finding someone else. “And I might not be the one for you,” she sings, adding “But you ain’t about to have no boo.”

The Chorus Is More Clear-Cut Than The Relationship

Ariana spells it all out in a few stanzas.

“You ain’t my boyfriend (Boyfriend)/And I ain’t your girlfriend (Girlfriend)/But you don’t want me to see nobody else/And I don’t want you to see nobody,” are the lyrics that sum up the entirety of the video. That fit of rage you get when you see the person you’re crushin’ on speaking to someone else is enough to make your blood boil. But at the end of the day, you don’t have any claim on them anyway.

And Neither Of Them Can Deny Their Feelings

This hot and heavy clip makes no mistake of that.

From lingering looks, sensual kisses, and animalistic urges, the chemistry between these two lovebirds is off the charts. Sometimes your own life seems too complicated to bring someone else into the mix, but the heart wants what the heart wants. It doesn’t wait for the right time or place. After Ariana shoots an arrow into the hand of a cute girl at the party Mikey is flirting with, and Mikey beats up every guy keen on Ari, one of them makes the first move.
