People Are Sharing the Weird Things They’ve Found in Their Attics, and It’s Chilling

Do you have an attic? If so, you might be a little hesitant to go up there after reading through some of the strange and just plain creepy things these people have found.

Happiest Day of Your Life

One Reddit user reports that their parents found a wedding photo in the attic, which might not seem so strange at first. So what’s the problem?

Well, the twist is that it was—their own—wedding photo. As in, somehow their own wedding photo had ended up in their attic without their help.

We have to wonder if the family has a cat or some other mischievous creature who could have dragged it up there. Otherwise, we shudder to think of the alternatives.

Generous Victorian Ghosts

Another Reddit user shares that their house dates back to around 1600, which in itself is pretty impressive. The oldest house in the US was built around 1640.

But that’s not the point of this story. Apparently, they keep finding little surprises around the home; specifically, old Victorian coins tucked into the exposed beams.

At the time of posting, they’d left them all in place. We would have to agree with that course of action, just in case they’re integral to the structure.

Why is That in an AC Duct

When’s the last time you peeked in your air conditioner duct? You might want to, just in case you have a similar experience to this poster.

A now-deleted account on Reddit shared that they found an 8 mm camcorder tape from the 90s stashed inside a closed-off air conditioning duct. They haven’t watched it.

Another user commented that “This is how horror movies start,” and we agree. But as another commenter pointed out, “It’s already a movie.” Touche.

Letters Home

This next item isn’t so much creepy as much as it just feels like seeing something you weren’t meant to see. It was found in a 130-year-old farmhouse.

Up in the attic, the homeowner found a bunch of random items, including rolls of wallpaper and a steamer trunk. Of course, they had to look in the trunk.

Inside, they found a large stack of letters dating back to the 1930s and 1940s. They were written by a WWII soldier to his family at home.

Shipwreck Relics

An old sewing machine might be something you expect to find left behind in an attic. But this one had a special provenance. Apparently, it came from a shipwreck.

The machine was an old Singer, manually hand-powered machine, complete in its wooden case. The homeowner happened to find a similar one in a museum.

It was a nautical museum, and the machines both came from a ship named Clan McMaster, which shipwrecked in 1923. It was carrying sewing machines. Go figure!

You Left Someone Behind

We’re all guilty of leaving things behind sometimes, whether it’s while traveling or even when moving. But to leave behind an entire family pet?

One Reddit user shared that the previous owner’s cat didn’t move out with the rest of the family and instead had been hiding in the wall.

The cat was coming out at night to drink water, but it gave itself away by leaving paw prints in some sawdust after a few days.

Some Very Fancy Mice

It might not be that strange to find mice in your attic, but they’re usually dressed pretty modestly. Not these mice. They were dressed to impress.

Unfortunately, they were actually taxidermied mice, and they were all wearing silly hats, according to the Reddit user’s comment. We really hope there were tophats.

Apparently, the commenter’s spouse wasn’t as thrilled with the find as they were, and the family ended up moving the mice into a storage unit.

That’s One Way to Watch the Superbowl

One user worked up the nerve to peek around the corners of their small attic crawlspace, only to find a huge antenna lurking up there.

Apparently, it took up half the roof space, which is pretty impressive. Why? Well, the home used to be in the middle of nowhere before the area was developed.

The previous owner needed a large antenna to be able to watch anything. The new owner tried it out and was able to pick up channels 75 miles away!

Hippie Hangout

If you’ve ever watched “That 70s Show,” you’ll know that kids and teens liked to make their hangout space in the basement. But what’s wrong with the attic?

In one particular home, the new owner went up to the attic and found a shag carpet, a crude table made of plywood, psychedelic paintings, and florescent lights.

The previous owners were an elderly couple, and when asked, they said that their grandson used to go up there and listen to “hippie music.”

Too Many Gnomes

There’s not much context for this story, but we don’t think it’s really necessary. Long story short, this Reddit user found about 50 porcelain gnomes in their home.

We can understand having maybe one or two gnomes, although even that is a questionable design decision. But to have 50? And then to leave them behind?

We would love to know more about those gnomes: where did they come from? Where did they end up? Do they come to life at night?

Don’t Even Want to Know

This one was actually found in a crawlspace in a Reddit user’s basement, but it’s been haunting us enough that we want to include it.

In a crawlspace that was only accessible through a hatch in the basement, they found a completely blacked-out mason jar. What’s in it? They don’t know.

It’s apparently really heavy, but nothing shifts when you shake the jar. And they can’t get the lid to open. Whatever’s in there, it can’t be good.

A Colorful Collection

One homeowner started scraping up paint off of the woodwork in their home, only to find layers and layers of different paint colors underneath.

It turns out that the previous owner was a man who lived there for 40 years and didn’t like to spend a lot of money. So he collected near-empty paint cans.

He would get them from the hardware store for cheap, and use any paint he could get his hands on to paint his home.

Pretty Sure That’s Poison

The things we’ve talked about so far might be weird, but they’re not dangerous (at least that we know of). But this one was absolutely toxic.

One Reddit user was clearing out their late grandfather’s house when they found barrels of cyanide, apparently from the 1950s. Not something you want around the house.

The user doesn’t mention why their grandfather had those barrels other than that he never threw anything out. That doesn’t really explain it, if you ask us.

Basically the Lottery

Coin collectors know that a box of coins can be worth well more than the actual value of the coins. That’s what this Reddit user discovered.

They found an old coin collection that ended up netting them a tidy $850. That’s not a bad bonus for moving into a new house.

They also found tons of alcohol along with the coins, which paints an interesting picture of what the previous owners of the home might have been like.

Secret Agent Lair

One user’s family bought a house in Brooklyn, where they found a hidden compartment behind a wooden board in a closet. There was something interesting inside.

After prying off the board, they found an old ham radio setup. The home was purchased just following WWII, and the previous owners were German.

So, the parents told the kids that the previous owners might have been secret agents, spying for the other side. Honestly, it doesn’t sound too far-fetched.

A Peculiar Menagerie

Taxidermied mice are one thing, but a taxidermied bear might be a little bit more startling. One commenter found just that in their attic.

They had to go up to get the pilot light working on the heater during a power outage. Using just the light from their phone, they ended up stumbling.

When they looked up, they saw nothing less than the snarling mouth of a taxidermied bear. They later discovered more taxidermied wildlife, too.

Beating the Odds

About the best-case scenario we can think of when you’re finding weird things in your attic is finding a stash of cold, hard cash.

One Reddit user says that their husband found an envelope full of money and gambling notes under a corner of a carpet that was being torn up.

The house was previously inhabited by two elderly people who used to go to Atlantic City to gamble. Seems like they were pretty lucky, too!

You Might Need These

This commenter sadly included the least context for their post out of anyone. They simply said, “Dentures.” Still, that’s not something we want to find.

Having someone else’s dentures seems very personal, and we’re not sure what we would even do with them if we found them.

Do you throw them away? Take them to a dentist? Bury them and hope they don’t haunt you for the rest of your life? We’re not sure.

That’s Topps

It would be nice for this user if baseball cards were always worth something, but sadly, that isn’t the case. Still, it’s a pretty cool find.

They found a complete collection of Topps baseball cards from the 1990s, with some additional random cards thrown into the mix. That’s an impressive find.

A complete set of 1990s Topps baseball cards is currently going for about $40 on eBay, so it’s no lottery win. We wonder if someone misses them.

For Good Luck

There are some things that you just know are going to put a curse on you and your entire family, and this is one example.

A user on r/AskReddit shared that they and their husband were tearing out walls when they found a wishbone nailed above the door.

The fact that it was hidden in the wall is probably the most disturbing part, but the whole thing feels entirely cursed. Maybe don’t touch it.
