These At-Home Experiments Will Make You Feel Like A Real Scientist

As a kid, science was fun and memorable (unlike science in any higher education level). What we probably didn’t realize at the time was that those fun experiments that felt like borderline magic are actually completely doable. Even the ones we didn’t learn about in school (that we’ve likely just seen online) give us that sense of childlike nostalgia for experimenting. Like that popular coal video, where it’s put in peanut butter and comes out as a crystal, these tricks will seriously blow your mind.

Homemade Eyeball

Materials:

• Glue
• Ink

Instructions:

1. Squeeze out a large dot of glue onto a surface.
2. Put one drop of dark ink in the center of the glue, and watch an eyeball-like pattern form!

Dancing Drawings

Materials:

• Chalk marker
• Plate with high sides
• Water

Instructions:

1. Draw a figure/animal in the center of the plate with the marker.
2. Pour some water into the plate, covering the whole middle of it.
3. Watch your drawings come to life!

Living Slime

Materials:

• Bowl
• Glue
• Water
• Liquid starch
• Iron oxide
• Magnet

Instructions:

1. In a bowl, mix one bottle of glue with water, liquid starch, and iron oxide until a slime forms.
2. Move the magnet over the top of the slime — it will be attracted to the magnet, however you move it.

Permanent Paper Clip

Materials:

• Warm water
• Paper clip
• Bowl

Instructions:

1. Pour warm water in a bowl.
2. Undo the paper clip, twisting it into odd shapes.
3. Put the paper clip into the water, and watch it go back to its original shape.

Soft Egg

Materials:

• Cup
• Vinegar
• Raw egg

Instructions:

1. Pour vinegar into the cup.
2. Leave a raw, uncracked egg in the vinegar overnight.
3. When you come back, the egg will be squishy, without a shell, and slightly see-through.

Magical Tie Dye

Materials:

• Deep dish
• Milk
• Food coloring
• Cotton ball
• Dish soap

Instructions:

1. In the dish, pour some milk until the bottom is covered.
2. Arrange drops of food coloring all over the milk in whatever pattern you like.
3. Take a cotton ball dipped in some dish soap and drop it into the center.
4. See the colors spread out like instant tie dye.

White Rose

Materials:

• White rose
• X-ACTO knife
• 4 glasses
• Food coloring
• Rubber band

Instructions:

1. Trim the stem of the white rose, and split the ends with a knife until you have four prongs.
2. Fill the four glasses with water, and add different colors of food coloring separately in each glass.
3. Arrange the glasses in a diamond shape, and secure them with a rubber band.
4. Place one of the rose’s stem prongs in each glass of water, leave it overnight, and come back to a colorful rose.
