Have you ever been mistaken for someone else? Or received something that most definitely wasn’t meant for you? Don’t worry, it’s happened to most of us. Either a name gets mixed up, or a stranger thinks we’re someone that we’re not. But, usually, we can just shrug it off and move on with our lives. But when this recently happened to comedian Paula Skaggs, she chose to make the most of it.

!!"

Skaggs, who’s also a writer and producer, is best known for her work with Second City. She also has a podcast called Being Earnest that she hosts with friend Josh Linden. There they talk about comedy and a wide variety of topics ranging from pizza to bugs. So when it comes to captivating an audience, she’s a pro – even on Twitter.

And while most of her tweets are funny, this one truly found its audience.

Hello, relatability!

Probably because we’ve all been on the receiving end of an honest mistake or two, and only wish we would have thought to take it to the next level like she did.

Here’s what happened:

It appears to have been a classic case of wrong email.

Skaggs appears to have mistakenly gotten an email from the International Conference on Dentistry and Oral Health. This seems to be a legit event, which is taking place in the U.K. from September 16 to 18, 2019.

But does it raise a couple of red flags? Of course.

For one, according to their website, this conference will feature “an impressive roaster of keynote speakers.”

Roaster? You mean roster?

If this were such a big event, you’d assume they’d have someone spellcheck their site before going live…

Also, they invited Skaggs and asked her to speak at the conference — as a dentist, not as a comedian.

Skaggs made some incredible topic suggestions to the people organizing the event.

Her first speech idea was called “Arts, Crafts, Teeth… and YOU! Simple, Fun Art Projects to do with Discarded Teeth.”

Her “easy” art ideas included necklaces and terrariums.

She recommended bringing a few bags of teeth to the seminar.

Sadly, they didn’t respond. So, this prompted Skaggs to change up her topic suggestions.

Now, it’d be called “Teeth! What Are They Goof for? (Absolutely Nothing), Think Again Buddy! An In-Depth Look into How Teeth Can Be Beneficial.”

[fm_twitter url=”https://twitter.com/ryanjacuzzi/status/1159587356732776449″]

Again, participants were encouraged to bring bags of teeth.

Alas, still no reply back.

So, Skaggs changed it up once more and made her topic about the importance of using improv in dentistry instead of teeth.

That should have been the biggest dead giveaway.

As of now, it looks like she’s not on the roster.

It’d be curious to see if the conference might have taken her seriously if she sent in a headshot, like requested.

It turns out that she wasn’t the only non-dentist invited, meaning that the panelists could be anyone.

The best news of all?

[fm_twitter url=”https://twitter.com/twentythousand_/status/1159604699391090689″]

She won over a bunch of new fans.

Let this be a reminder that social media can be a magical thing.

And if you use it for good, it can introduce you to a lot of talented people.

Looks like Skaggs wasn’t the only one mistakenly invited to the conference…

[fm_twitter url=”https://twitter.com/LauraJeanDawe/status/1159596567126523904″]

Other people easily commiserated. They, too, had been invited to something they shouldn’t have.

The difference? They likely just deleted the email.

Skaggs, surprised by the attention that her tweet got, used the attention to direct people to her podcast. And as expected, she got a lot of responses like this.

[fm_twitter url=”https://twitter.com/ApolloBratton/status/1159604021671464961″]

You have to wonder whether or not the creators of the conference started panicking after Skaggs sent in that first email. Without a doubt, using teeth for arts and crafts would have been the most talked-about speech at the conference.

[fm_twitter url=”https://twitter.com/smileonmeonce/status/1159647598984204288″]

The comedian also deserves some kudos for using the term “Dentisting Community.”

[fm_twitter url=”https://twitter.com/Peter_Horton/status/1159584515393802242″]

Every sentence of each of her emails was so brilliantly crafted.

In her last email, she also asks if the Queen was expected to attend.

[fm_twitter url=”https://twitter.com/i1ana/status/1159885740018323458″]

Because, as you know, Queen Elizabeth II probably loves going to dentist conferences in the little time off she has.

Even though she seems to be more in line with improv, let’s hope that Skaggs announces a stand-up tour soon.

She’s proven that she knows how to make people laugh, and she’s so good with words.

Share.
