Have you ever woken up from a dream so bizarre that it affects your entire day? It’s not a pleasant experience — especially when you dreamt about doing stuff with someone who isn’t your significant other. You can so feel guilty for your subconscious’s filthy mind that it’s hard to look your partner in the eye the next morning. How was your sleep, hon? They ask. Good — no, bad. Uh, it was fine.

!!"

So, what do these dreams mean? And should we be concerned for the future of our relationships?

According to Dream Symbols A to Z by German author Georg Fink, dreaming of a new lover can symbolize something more profound than just sex. Being intimate with someone else in a dream can indicate that the dreamer may be too dependent on someone else in real life and the psyche is encouraging the dreamer to break free.

Although, as you probably figured, being intimate with another person in dreamland can also symbolize something much more straightforward. Fink writes that if the dreamer is in a long-term relationship, this type of dream can mean that he or she may not feel sexually satisfied with their current partner or that the dreamer yearns for more intimacy.

“The images of crude sexual urges many times are detours used by the unconscious to point out problems in a relationship or inhibitions that block or at least impede human contact,” Fink writes. Ouch.

But what if you’re not dreaming of having sex with someone who isn’t your partner? What if someone new just shows up?

Fink writes that according to Carl Jung, meeting a stranger of the opposite sex usually means your psyche is tapping into your unconscious male/female side. Furthermore, as Freud noted, women showing up in a [heterosexual] man’s dream can signify sexual desires that cannot be satisfied due to “moral reservations,” as Fink writes.

And if a man platonically appears in a woman’s dream, Fink notes that this man usually represents a teacher or someone/something that will divert her from her worries.

These dream symbols may or may not apply to your situation — dream images are unique to every person who experiences them. However, if you have any issues with your partner, your brain may be urging you to discuss them openly. Feelings should be shared to ensure that both you and your partner are happy and fulfilled.
