35-year-old Adam Tapp is a paramedic in London. During a woodworking project at his shop in 2018, he was pierced by a wood-etching device that electrocuted him. He explained, “All my senses were overwhelmed by 12,000 volts of DC electricity. It was one of the most excruciatingly painful things I’ve ever experienced”.

Thankfully, Tapp’s wife Stephanie, is a cardiac nurse and immediately started performing CPR on her husband while his friend called 911. When the ambulance arrived, they defibrillated him twice before his vitals became active again. However, he didn’t actually regain consciousness until 6 hours later, when he woke up in the ICU.

What occurred in the 11 and a half minutes that he was dead was truly fascinating. Adam explained that he first felt a falling sensation and then an infinite black void that he could only liken to deep space.

Adam described his experience as “perfect”. He explained, “It was this perfect inky blackness. I wasn’t Adam. I wasn’t dead. I wasn’t anything. I was just perfect, like absolute contentment.” He described it as being a very positive experience, and something unlike anything he had ever felt before.

Adam also stated that he felt disconnected from his body and everything around him, as though he himself was just one with the universe. He stated, “I just started fading into the fabric of the universe. It was so warm and peaceful and pleasant.”

He also described what he saw outside of the inky black void. He described geometric shapes nda patterns. He said, “It was like gasoline on water, this rainbow effect that was iridescent to some extent, and it was just this juxtaposition of thoughts and feelings and emotions”.

No Sense of  Time

When he woke from the coma, 6 hours later, he said that if someone told him he had been under for years, he would have believed it. He had no sense of time. And what was stranger is that he felt almost out of place in his body.

It took some adjusting to return to the life of the living. He said that he became hyperaware of things like the texture of his skin and his smell. He had an overwhelming realization that “this is just the stage, it’s simply an evolution of consciousness.”

Near-Death Experiences

Adam isn’t he only one to describe positive feelings from a near-death experience. Many people encounter tunnels of light or even feelings of euphoria similar to the ones Adam described. Science and religion both have their own explanations for these phenomena.
