Capsule wardrobe. It seems to be a phrase popping up not only on social and eco-conscious blogs, but in the mainstream as well. But what is a capsule wardrobe? And, as a modern mystic with a witch aesthetic, how can you build a fall capsule wardrobe that suits your style?
London boutique owner Susie Faux came up with the term capsule wardrobe back in the ’70s. Basically, it’s all about having a minimal wardrobe. Your fall capsule wardrobe should include timeless essentials along with a few seasonal pieces to switch out throughout the year. It’s a great wardrobe to build if you are trying to declutter, or if you are distancing yourself from fast fashion.
Fortunately, having a capsule wardrobe doesn’t mean you can’t still rock the edgy-meets-boho style that defines the witchy vibes. You can still look like you are having your morning coffee while you perform spells in Laurel Canyon with just a few choice fashion items.
Here are some staple boho clothing pieces that will have you well on your way to Stevie Nicks-level witchiness.
1. A Layerable Black Dress

Are you feeling the witchy vibes yet?
The key to a solid capsule wardrobe is picking pieces you can layer, like this Adella lace mini-dress. The asymmetrical ruffled hem and crocheted bodice are witchy enough on their own, but add a long sweater and a killer pair of boots and you have a witchy fall outfit.
2. High Quality Black Jeans
[image_with_caption text=”Macy’s” image=”https://itsblossom.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/black-jeans.jpg”]
These are a staple of any style of capsule wardrobe.
Black is always in style, and these black Levi’s 72 High-Rise Skinny Jeans should be on your radar. Try pairing these with a vintage rocker tee, an on-trend lace number, or with a breathable body suit.
3. Lace-Up Boots
[image_with_caption text=”Macy’s” image=”https://itsblossom.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/witchy-lace-up-boot.jpg”]
Imagine stomping around in these, you powerful witch.
If you should be investing a good chunk of change in anything for your fall wardrobe, it is a solid pair of boots. Now, lace-up might not be your thing, but we feel it gives these Justin Lace-Up Booties from Kenneth Cole an extra witchy vibe.
4. A Soft, Plain T-Shirt
[image_with_caption text=”Macy’s” image=”https://itsblossom.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/burnout-tee.jpg”]
You can create so many looks with a simple tee.
Every fall capsule wardrobe needs a soft tee, but an adult version. This seamed burnout tee by Lucky Brand comes in a variety of colors, all of which are perfect for a witchy fall capsule wardrobe.
5. A Leather Jacket
[image_with_caption text=”Macy’s” image=”https://itsblossom.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/moto-jacket.jpg”]
Because witches give off rocker vibes, too.
Frankly, everyone should have a leather jacket in their permanent wardrobe — or at least a faux one of high quality. Skip the fast fashion leather jackets that tend to fall apart and invest in a high quality piece, like this moto jacket by Michael Kors.
6. A Boho Duster Kimono
[image_with_caption text=”Macy’s” image=”https://itsblossom.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/boho-kimono.jpg”]
It’s all about layering.
Opt for a lighter material (as opposed to a sweater material) for this fall fashion piece. You can have some fun and go for a wild and vibrant boho pattern to pair with solid basics, like this lace-back kimono from Macy’s.
7. A Maxi Skirt
[image_with_caption text=”Macy’s” image=”https://itsblossom.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/skirt.jpg”]
This can be worn year-round, given the right layering.
And guess what? This lovely skirt from White Mark has pockets! As well all know t00 well, the coveted pocketed-skirt or dress can be difficult to fine. This black shirt will make an excellent addition to your fall wardrobe.
8. A Bright Dress
[image_with_caption text=”Macy’s” image=”https://itsblossom.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/cute-free-people-dress.jpg”]
Go bold or go home.
One of the hardest parts of putting together a capsule wardrobe is finding pieces that are not just on-trend for the current season, but for the foreseeable future. No wardrobe is complete without a bright work-to-night boho dress, like this pleated Free People dress. You can opt for a pattern, but solids are much easier to mix and match.
9. Witchy Earrings
[image_with_caption text=”Macy’s” image=”https://itsblossom.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/witch-earrings.jpg”]
These studs can be worn on any occasion.
When you’re not rocking a special earring, this set of Steve Madden posts will sure come in handy. The gold earrings come in the sun, moon, and evil eye shapes. If you’re feeling extra bold, go ahead and mix and match them.
10. A Jumpsuit
[image_with_caption text=”Macy’s” image=”https://itsblossom.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/black-jumpsuit.jpg”]
On Wednesdays we wear black.
Okay, we know there is a lot of black in this capsule wardrobe, but what witch would have it any other way? Plus, keeping it neutral helps keep your fall capsule wardrobe streamlined.
Keep it sleek (but still witchy) with this long jumpsuit by MANGO. Add your own baubles to make this piece pop.
11. A Slouchy Plaid Shirt
[image_with_caption text=”Macy’s” image=”https://itsblossom.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/plaid-free-people-shirt.jpg”]
For witches going for a more grunge vibe.
Is there any pattern that screams “fall” more than plaid? Every witch needs to add this to their uniform, STAT. This Hidden Valley Top by Free People can be layered over a dress like a jacket, or it can be worn on its own with your black jeans.
12. A Uniform Black Dress
[image_with_caption text=”Macy’s” image=”https://itsblossom.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/chiffon-black-dress.png”]
This is honestly a staple in any capsule wardrobe.
Even if your witchy aesthetic tends to lean more hippie than sleek, it’s important to have that black dress you can wear to anything. This gorgeous Anne Klein chiffon-sleeved shirtdress can be worn to the office or out on the town. We love a versatile piece.
13. Dressed Up Booties
[image_with_caption text=”Macy’s” image=”https://itsblossom.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/cute-witchy-booties.png”]
For when you need a little magickal pep in your step.
Nothing can give you more confidence than a killer bootie, and these perforated Jaccee “shooties” (as in shoes that are booties) can be dressed up or down. Pair them with a tee and jeans for a slick, casual look, or pair them with a flowy dress. The choice is yours.
14. A Simple-But-Chic Tank Top
[image_with_caption text=”Macy’s” image=”https://itsblossom.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/simple-tank-top.png”]
Again, in black.
If you are new to the concept of a fall capsule wardrobe, you may already be feeling a little claustrophobic with all of the black — but remember, the point of a capsule collection is to have a minimal number of pieces that can all be mixed and matched.
And you could easily wear this contrast sheer trim top from INC International Concepts with any of the bottoms on this list.
15. Black (Or Blue) Jean Shorts
[image_with_caption text=”Macy’s” image=”https://itsblossom.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/jean-shorts.png”]
Okay, we will be a little more flexible with this one.
Even if it isn’t incredibly hot out, it’s nice to have a pair of jean shorts you can always depend on, like these mid-length shorts from Levi’s. You can even pair them with tights during the colder months for a more alternative vibe.

And of course, you can add more pieces to your capsule wardrobe. Generally speaking, most capsule wardrobes have somewhere between 15-40 pieces in them, depending on who you ask.
The whole point of a capsule wardrobe is to purchase with intention.
If you’re still having trouble whittling down your overflowing wardrobe, really think about whether or not you will wear a piece before you buy it. And once you do commit, opt for a higher quality clothing item so it doesn’t have to be replaced for as long as possible. After all, making clothes uses a lot of water and resources that hurt the Earth.
