Season Three Of The Crown Finally Has A Premiere Date — Here’s What You Should Know

Fans of The Crown have been waiting for the show’s third season for quite some time. Not only is the show compelling, but this is the first year that the role of Queen Elizabeth II has been swapped out.

Before this season, actress Claire Foy played the role — and she did a wonderful job. But the news about being replaced didn’t come as a surprise. Back in 2017, actress Olivia Colman was rumored to be replacing Foy if the show continued on into another season.

As the show attempts to catch up to the present day, executives have chosen to hire and replace actors as time continues on. Shows like This Is Us have proven that makeup can help transform anyone, but that might have been too much of a hassle for Netflix. Especially since the show is already known for being one of its most expensive.

So, who is Colman? She recently had a recurring role on Fleabag and was also an important character in the series Broadchurch. Playing Queen Elizabeth II would likely be nerve-wracking for anyone — especially since Queen Elizabeth II is still very much alive and might be watching the show. Talk about pressure.

Here’s the bad news. Fans will still need to wait a few weeks to see Colman’s portrayal.

Netflix announced today, August 12th, that the series would resume on November 17, 2019. They also posted a short teaser clip on Twitter.

People are already impressed by what they see. The show and its cast aren’t strangers at the Emmy Awards, but some predict that Colman’s portrayal will earn them even more nods.

Seriously — at the 2018 Emmys, both Foy and director Stephen Daldry took home awards. The show was nominated in four additional categories.

It’s almost a relief that the show didn’t rush to push out more episodes. The showrunners know what they need to do to rack up more nominations in the future.

But based on that time gap, some fans felt a little slighted. It’s been all this time and Netflix only released one short clip!

And they have every right. The second season of the show debuted on December 8th, 2017 — and most fans binge-watched it all at once, meaning they probably finished up the season around the same time.

The show is still super expensive to make. Mental Floss reports that each episode costs anywhere between $6.5 to $13 million. A lot of that money goes toward the amazing costumes.

Wonder how Foy feels about giving up the role? She’s reportedly pretty happy about it.

“That’s it, I’m on the bench. I’m not even on the bench – I’m just in a different team on my own. Unemployed!” she joked at the BFI Radio Times TV Festival, according to Grazia.  “We always knew when we signed up to it, and also not to be funny but it’s also a real plus,” she added.

“I’m sure to some people [the job security] sounds amazing but to us, it’s like, seven years of playing the same person?” she added. “And this is a tough job, you know?… And that’s a lot of your life that you sign over to it.”

Colman felt inspired by Foy’s work, which is always great to see. When you replace an actor, you hope the replacement is, at least, a fan of The Crown.

“She’s f***ing amazing and it’s a very hard act to follow,” Colman said in a Radio Times interview, according to Harper’s Bazaar. She also admitted that her husband was a fan.

It must be a relief to Colman that so many fans are rallying for her. Let’s just hope they don’t compare Foy’s work to Colman’s work, as the character has evolved so much throughout these three seasons.
