We all like to think that we’re unique in our own way. Seriously — genetic makeup is a fascinating thing. Even if you share a certain percentage of DNA with a sibling, it doesn’t mean you’re the same person. When we’re kids, we often have plenty of alone time to pick up new quirks or rituals. Whether you do something based on superstition, or because it’s something you saw on television, you sometimes may not be upfront about your particularly weird habits due to the fact that you feel like you may be judged.
Because what if other people completely forget the award-winning parts of your personality the second they hear about your quirk?
That’s one of the many reasons why the internet has become such a valuable resource. On sites like Reddit, you’re able to participate in numerous conversations with the help of a simple screen name. The anonymity comes with pros and cons, but it also allows us to find the space to connect with those who happen to be just like us!
Here’s the funny thing. Sometimes we discover that the things that set us apart aren’t so weird after all. Here are some of the best weird habits and quirks that are actually surprisingly normal.
1. Avoiding Your Home Town
Is there anything worse than making small-talk with a neighbor at the grocery store?
…And then trying not to bump into them in every aisle after? By taking a drive to the next town over, you can be sure that all of your shopping will be done in peace. Here’s a big truth — people aren’t always down to socialize. Especially if their time is limited, and they don’t want to appear rude.
2. Staring
Have you ever thought about just how many different people there are in the world?
Staring may be rude, but when you’re traveling out of state, you may feel like social rules go out the window. Sometimes, you want to act a certain way just to see what it’s like. Even though it might make the stranger feel a little self-conscious, they’re likely not going to remember your face, or even the moment, in a few days.
3. Skip The Chapstick
Okay, we’ve all been there.
And we’ve all regretted it later. It’s a move you may do when you’re feeling anxious and haven’t had a chance to buy yet another Chapstick (only to have it accidentally get washed and ruin all your clothes — again). But it happens. Don’t be too hard on yourself if you’re cruel to your lips, especially during seasons where the air gets dry.
4. Too Much Caffeine
Think coffee is only a morning beverage? Think again!
This is one of those pretty common but weird habits, especially for college students. In fact, it’s almost a rite of passage. But adults are also known to sip on a late-night bev or two. It’s a mistake you’ll always make more than once, since sometimes all you need is a hot, familiar beverage. At least you can scroll through Reddit when you’re awake at 2 a.m.
5. Pet Chat
[fm_twitter url=”https://twitter.com/Syborgg/status/1098595186999885824″]
Your dog probably appreciates the reminder that they have to be on their best behavior.
It’s sad when we have to leave our pets behind for the day and stumble off to work. But by sharing a few words of wisdom with them beforehand and letting them take the best care of the house as possible, it can really give us a little peace of mind (or at least that’s what we tell ourselves).
6. Bathtub Fun
To be fair, there’s no official age where you technically have to stop playing in the tub.
Not only is it wonderful to let your imagination run wild, but it’s a great way to soak your feet. You might not have gone so far as to pretend you were in a submarine, but there’s a good chance you’ve created your own games or let your mind run free while you were relaxing in there.
7. Drinking In A Less-Than-Classy Manner
It’s almost like you’re daring your mouth to hold onto the excitement.
If you do this too many times, you may feel it the next morning. But for this person it’s hard not to! Whiskey is such a dignified drink that when you hold it in your mouth for a while, it’s almost like you’re secretly breaking a rule. Why not have a little extra fun on your night out?
8. Mixed Up Dinner
[fm_twitter url=”https://twitter.com/JustJoJoXXX/status/1098585966665744384″]
A lot of us have a problem with our food touching. But then again a lot of us don’t.
Lots of people reveal weird habits like this during holiday dinners, until they’re old enough for it to be considered childish or inappropriate. But consider Thanksgiving, for instance! Turkey, mashed potatoes, peas, stuffing, and gravy just taste so much better when they’re all mixed together! Plus, you might accidentally discover a brand new favorite food combo this way.
9. Tiny Goals

When you’re swamped with a big project, this is legitimately the best way to stay motivated.
Doing stuff like this also shows that you’re fun to be around. The more you “achieve” as far as fun mini-goals go, the more likely it is that you won’t get bogged down by the big, important stuff. It’s just awkward telling people you feel pride over the fact that you flawlessly managed to put all your clothes in the washer within the time span of a commercial break.
10. Pizza In A Time Of Crisis
It’s rare, but sometimes you apparently get an uncut pie.
That’s no problem if it’s just part of one (in fact, it’s more of a challenge). So, if you want to split that pizza and don’t have the tools, you’ll need to find a creative way to make it work. You’ll just want to make sure those scissors are clean first.
11. One-Person Podcast
[fm_twitter url=”https://twitter.com/a_Scarlet_b/status/1137877021781110785″]
This is a super common habit among people who listen to a lot of podcasts.
Podcasters have a specific way of talking. The one especially weird and quirky thing to do to kick it up a notch? Pretend to talk about popular podcast ads, like Squarespace, MeUndies, Casper, and Stamps.com. Ask yourself, what would your personal offer code be in the podcast of your life?
12. Small Talk
Who hasn’t had a long conversation with nobody before?
Sometimes, it’s important to work out future conversations in your head before you actually have them. It’s a great form of practice. But sometimes, we forget that these behaviors can sneak into our everyday lives. Next time you see someone mouthing something to nobody in particular, just know they’re probably not even aware.
13. Car Buddy
Your car has been with you through traffic jams and road construction. It’s a dependable friend.
Many of us name our cars and give them personalities, especially focused around their features and interior design. If you travel solo a lot, this weird little maneuver may be something you consider to be normal. Sometimes, you just need to talk to someone and not have them offer advice right back.
14. The Great TP Debate
[fm_twitter url=”https://twitter.com/jahnz99/status/1098638980118208513″]
When it comes to toilet paper, everyone has a preference.
But to actually go over to other people’s houses and change it? It’s actually way more common than you may think. I can go either way, but have had people (“over” people, almost always) come to my home and change it — or at the very least, lecture me — based on their own personal aesthetic.
15. Cheeks
Ever bite the inside of your cheek when you’re stressed? Yeah, you’re not alone.
This is another one of those weird habits similar to nail biting, or the aforementioned lip gnawing. Sometimes, people do it out of boredom or anxiety. Even though it’s very normal, it’s a pretty important habit to break, since if you accidentally bite the inside of your cheek, chances are it’ll be a little sensitive the next time you try to eat.
16. Never The First
[fm_twitter url=”https://twitter.com/Jitterbugperfu2/status/1099475478208020481″]
I do this, too — in my mind, the first copy has just had too many other people touching it.
It’s also exposed to things like sneezes, germs, and everything else under the sun! Surely that second or third copy (or, product not facing the front) is just a little cleaner. In actuality, it probably doesn’t make a lot of difference. It’s just a quirk that’s hard to shake that other people can understand.
17. A Deep Breath
Focusing on your breathing is actually a big part of meditation.
And holding it in for a moment is a solid reminder as to how important breath is. There’s a scientific reason as to why you can’t hold your breath until you die (which would be creepy and unsettling) so being conscious of your breath for a little isn’t the worst thing you can do for yourself.
18. The Butter Battle
Dr. Seuss once wrote an entire book about this. Well, sort of — it had multiple meanings.
It might make you feel like you’ll just end up getting butter drippings on your pants, but the truth is, it exposes your tongue and taste buds to flavor a bit quicker. It’s literally a totally new (and weird) way to enjoy the same basic ingredients. What’s not to love about eating food non-traditionally?
19. Puppy Themes
[image_with_caption text=”” image=”https://itsblossom.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/Screenshot-7-e1561570008847.png”]
In a perfect world, we’d all have television shows that we star in with our dogs.
We’d be world famous, and everyone would know we’re the best of friends with our pups. But that’s pretty unlikely. Still, you probably have a theme song ready just in case it ever becomes a reality! And your dog probably loves it whenever they get a chance to hear it.
