There are some universal things in life that everybody — and we mean everybody — has to deal with. One of those things is doing laundry. Specifically, washing and drying your underwear. You might be thinking, “Duh, of course I know how to wash my underwear. I do it all the time.” But do you know the best way to dry your underwear? How about your more delicate garments, like lace bras and underwear?
You might not realize it, but there’s a chance you could be drying your undies all wrong. If you’ve ever done a load of laundry and noticed your delicates come out misshapen, or even ripped, this tip is for you. The best way to prevent your lace underwear from ripping in the dryer is simple: Don’t put it in the dryer at all. If you want to extend the life of your delicates, you should wash them by hand and lay them flat to dry.
If for some reason you’re not into the idea of washing your lace underwear by hand, or you don’t have time, you can toss it in the washing machine at your own risk. But you really shouldn’t put it in the dryer. The heat from the dryer will shrink your undies, ruin the elastic, and break down the delicate fabric.

First, fill your bathroom sink with cool or room temperature water. (Warm or hot water will have the same effect on your items as dryer heat.) Then, soak your delicates — don’t add laundry detergent just yet! — for about 45 minutes.
Once your items have had time to soak, add a small amount of detergent to the water and gently work it into the fabric. Be sure to use a very mild detergent. You can even buy some made specifically for washing your undies. Finally, rinse until the water runs clear and there’s no trace of suds left. Then, it’s on to drying.

It might be tempting to wring out your delicates, but that could do even more damage. Instead, lay your items flat on a towel. Cover them with another towel and press down to remove excess water. Finally, keep them flat on the towel to dry. Don’t hang them! Hanging garments to dry might stretch and ruin them. You don’t want the washing work you just did to go out the window.
Hand-washing and drying your lace underwear might seem like a lot of extra work on top of doing regular laundry. But it’s the best way to extend the life of your favorite garments. Hand-washing — and especially avoiding the dryer — will keep your delicates looking fresh and new for longer.
