One of the main reasons why we opt out of wearing skirts is because of that dreaded Seven Year Itch moment — we’re specifically referring to when Marilyn Monroe’s skirt flew up while she was standing over a subway grate. We’ll take pants over flashing the entire city any day. However, according to etiquette expert Myka Meier via The Sun, the royals have hacked the skirt system. If we take a page from Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton’s style book, we may never have to fear flashing again.
Meier, founder of Beaumont Etiquette, told Sun Online that Markle and Middleton rely heavily on static electricity to keep their skirts calm, cool, and collected.
“Often they wear body suits and clothes that actually increase static so it’s much harder for something to fly up,” Meier said. She then noted that she learned the same fashion tip while attending finishing school. “We were taught that when you are on the tarmac, if you do not use weights or heavy weighted material, you make sure [your skirt] will not fly up by wearing undergarments that keep the fabrics connect to your body.”
Static isn’t necessarily something we find particularly comfortable. But hey, if it will save us the embarrassment of being subjected to the “I see London, I see France” chant, we’re all for it.

Couturier to Queen Elizabeth for nearly a decade, Stewart Parvin, told the U.K.’s Daily Mail in 2012 that the Queen has her own method for maintaining modesty. Parvin sews circular curtain weights into the hemline of Elizabeth’s dresses and coats to ensure that the wind doesn’t cause a scene.

And if the wind is really whipping, the royal women will most likely opt to wear heavier fabrics, Meier said, which are less likely to be swept up in the breeze.
Now that we’re equipped with these royal fashion hacks, we feel more confident about tapping into our inner Meghan Markle and stepping out in a skirt. Bring on the static!
