Costco Members Say This Frustrating Gas Pump Problem Keeps Wasting Their Time

For many Costco members, stopping for gas is supposed to be a quick part of the shopping trip, but some members say a problem with membership-card scanners can turn fueling into a frustrating delay. Costco requires members to present a membership card at its fuel stations, and the pump checks the card to confirm that the membership is active before allowing the transaction to proceed. Recent member reports describe physical cards being rejected at the pump even when the membership works elsewhere inside the warehouse.

The Membership Card Has to Be Verified First

Costco’s fuel stations are reserved for members, with prepaid Costco Shop Card customers as an exception. The company’s fuel FAQ says customers present their membership card at the pump, where the system reads it and confirms that the membership is active. That extra verification step means a problem with the membership card or scanner can stop the fueling process before payment is even reached.

Some Members Say a Valid Card Gets Rejected

In a Reddit discussion, Costco members described situations in which their physical cards were rejected at the gas pump despite being valid. One member said the problem appeared shortly after renewing a membership, while another reported that a card worked for an in-store purchase but was declined at the fuel station. These reports are individual experiences rather than evidence that Costco has confirmed a systemwide problem.

A Card Can Work Inside but Fail at the Pump

One particularly confusing aspect of the complaints is that some members say their cards work normally at Costco’s warehouse but fail when they try to buy fuel. Reddit users have reported being able to make a purchase inside the store shortly before encountering a card error at the gas station. Because Costco’s fuel pumps separately read the membership card to verify eligibility, a successful warehouse transaction does not necessarily rule out a problem with the pump’s card-reading process.

Worn Cards May Be Part of the Problem

Some Reddit commenters have suggested that repeated use can wear down the magnetic stripe or otherwise make a physical card harder for a reader to recognize. Other members reported that replacing the card resolved their problem, while another said a card that failed through one scanning method worked when swiped. Costco does not identify worn membership cards as a general cause of fuel-pump failures in its official FAQ, so these explanations should be viewed as member experiences rather than an official diagnosis.

The Digital Card Can Offer Another Option

Costco’s current digital membership system provides another way for members to present their credentials. The company says digital membership cards can be used at Costco gas stations, and the app can display the member’s card after the account and membership have been verified. Costco also confirms that physical membership cards remain accepted, so members are not required to abandon the plastic card.

Members Say Attendants Can Sometimes Help

When a membership card fails at the pump, some Reddit users said asking a gas-station attendant for help allowed them to continue fueling. One commenter specifically said an attendant could swipe a card to get the member through the process, while other members described going to the membership counter to have a replacement card issued. The exact solution can depend on the station and the nature of the card or scanner problem.

Payment Comes After Membership Verification

Once the membership requirement is satisfied, Costco’s fuel stations use pay-at-the-pump technology and accept Visa, most PIN debit cards and prepaid Costco Shop Cards, with Oregon and New Jersey operating under different full-service rules. Costco also says a Visa or PIN debit transaction can involve a temporary pre-authorization of up to $150 before fueling begins. The company says it immediately sends the actual purchase amount after fuel is dispensed, while the card issuer is responsible for promptly removing the temporary hold.

A Few Extra Seconds Can Become a Bigger Hassle

Costco deliberately uses one-way traffic at its fuel stations and says its extra-long hoses are designed to help members get in and out quickly. That makes a rejected membership card particularly frustrating when a driver has already joined a line and has to troubleshoot the problem before fueling. Member reports suggest that even a simple card-reader failure can mean trying another scan method, finding an attendant or making a separate trip to the membership counter.

What Members Can Try Before Leaving the Pump

Members who encounter a rejected card can try the digital membership card if it is already set up, or ask the station attendant for assistance rather than immediately abandoning the fuel purchase. If the physical card repeatedly fails, visiting Costco’s membership counter may help determine whether the card needs to be replaced or the account needs attention. Costco confirms that both digital and physical membership cards can be used at its gas stations, giving members more than one way to verify their membership.
